Amsterdam’s Top Al fresco Restaurants

Amsterdam’s Top Al fresco Restaurants

Amsterdam’s culinary scene comes alive in the warmer months when the city’s restaurants open their terraces to the sun. From long, leisurely lunches to romantic dinners by the canal, these five spots promise memorable meals in the open air.

Marie

On the banks of the Amstel, Brasserie Marie offers an elegant al fresco experience with a dose of Parisian chic. Whether you choose to stop for a full meal or a drink with hors d’oeuvres – fresh oysters, veal tartare or fougasse (a Provençal flatbread laced with olives and herbs) – its wine list, expertly selected by in-house sommeliers, perfectly complements the seasonal French menu. For a unique twist, opt for the Brasserie Marie En Bateau experience and elevate your floating tour of Amsterdam with a curated selection of dishes and drinks from the restaurant.

Restaurant De Kas

Located in Park Frankendael, De Kas is a pioneer of the farm-to-table movement and standard bearer of the Michelin Green Star. The magical experience begins from the moment you arrive at the soaring greenhouse which houses the restaurant. Guests dine steps from the very soil where their meals begin, and ingredients are harvested from the restaurant’s gardens at the last moment possible to ensure the freshest meals.

Café Restaurant De Ysbreeker

De Ysbreeker is an Amsterdam institution that dates back to 1702. Open daily from 8am – 1am, it’s simultaneously a tea house, lunchroom, pub and restaurant with a constant stream of diners rolling through its leafy terrace from day to night. Expect a buzzing atmosphere and a menu that caters to every taste – including a wide range of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Restaurant De Belhamel

For a romantic meal we recommend De Belhamel, a hidden gem on the edge of the Jordaan neighbourhood. The restaurant itself is an ode to Art Nouveau with original fin de siècle decor conjuring the spirit of Old Paris, while its waterside terrace is one of the most tranquil and picturesque in the city. The menu highlights classic Dutch and French influences featuring ever-changing seasonal dishes. Signature items include the shrimp bisque, slow-cooked meats and indulgent pastas.

Restaurant Café De Plantage

This Mediterranean-inspired restaurant attracts locals and tourists alike with its enchanting location, housed in the Lendenlokalen building within the green expanse of De Plantage. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a long lunch after a day exploring the nearby ARTIS Zoo and Groote Museum, Planetarium and Aviary. Choose from an outdoor spot on the sycamore-fringed patio or, better yet, inside the historic 19th-century timber conservatory featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, gorgeous green beams and high ceilings that give the restaurant a modern and airy ambience.

If you’re in search of somewhere to base yourself in Amsterdam, InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam, set on the banks of the Amstel, is a landmark unto itself, a grand dame since its opening in 1867. If you’d prefer to be more central, De L’Europe Amsterdam, set in a dazzling 19th-century Rondeel building, is the perfect place to base yourself.
