In the Setswana language, Tswalu means “a new beginning.” That idea, imagined in ways both small and large, is the ethos upon which the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve has created itself. One of the largest privately owned game reserves in South Africa’s Northern Cape, Tswalu is so much more than a luxurious safari escape; it is an oasis of hope, conservation and restoration that is committed to protecting one of the country’s last great wilderness areas for many lifetimes to come.

Guests of Tswalu are positively enveloped by nature – the reserve spans over 111,000 hectares – and the property's gorgeous accommodations are designed for a harmonious existence with the surrounding landscape. With a maximum capacity of just 28 guests, Tswalu has two distinct camps to choose from: The Motse and Tarkuni. The Motse is a secluded and intimate village with just nine dwellings. Called “legae”, each marvellously calm haven comes with an open viewing deck and open fireplace alongside showers both indoors and out. Tarkuni Homestead was once the Oppenheimer family’s Tswalu home. Now, it comprises five individual suites, all of which are designed with a contemporary, understated elegance. Private terraces are furnished with daybeds which can transform into nighttime beds for guests hoping to sleep under the stars.

Michelin-starred South African chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen teamed up with Tswalu’s culinary team to craft cuisine that wonderfully reflects the region’s heritage. At the heart of the reserve’s gastronomy scene is sustainability; many ingredients are foraged in the nearby lands or produced by local suppliers to keep the property’s environmental impact as low as possible.
