"Located just off Dam, the funky W Hotel may be the perfect place for those looking for a hotel with an edge and dining and drinking establishments of the same vibe."

You don’t head to Amsterdam if you’re looking for staid or drab, so a stay at the W Amsterdam, a hotel spread out over two historic buildings across the street from one another, may prove to be the snazzy place you’re looking for. The hotel couldn’t be better located, almost on Dam Square and next door to the Royal Palace. One side, a former bank building, dates back to 1906 and the other, a telephone exchange from the 1920s, offers a different stay of a sort with the bank being a tad more traditional. You’ll find up-to-date furnishings, a contemporary vibe, snappy service and an uber-hip atmosphere everywhere you go.

There are just under 300 rooms and suites in total, and careful selection is necessary. Rooms range from very small – the ”Cozy” category – to the biggest, the Extreme Wow Suites which comes with a round bed and a round bath, city and canal views, Nespresso machines (as do all rooms) and pops of colour in the artwork, the cushions and the furnishings. Lighting is low in these rooms, so if you don’t like dim, don’t stay here. Also noteworthy is that the W Lounge on the roof of the Exchange is a very popular spot at night, one that stays open ‘till 3 AM on the weekends. Ask for a room very far away if you’re an early to bed type. Check-in for all rooms is done at the rooftop of Exchange, an odd choice.

The restaurants and bars are not part of the hotel but rather leased businesses, and there are good options within both buildings. For breakfast and dinner, The Duchess (at the Bank building) is open 7 days a week, and lunch is served on weekends too. In the evenings, the fare is decidedly French with a Nicoise flair. Otherwise, MR PORTER (rooftop at Exchange) is one of the city’s most celebrated steak houses and grill, where the cocktail bar is a popular place to start the evening – or finish it – and is a little more sedate than the atmosphere at the W Lounge. The restaurant is also open for a lavish breakfast, where the spread is laid out early for those looking to get to museums before the crowds, at 7 AM daily.

When it comes to recreation, there are a few choices, including a rooftop lap pool that’s long but very slender, while the spa has a sauna, steam room and other plunge pools for rejuvenation as well as a wide variety of treatments available. There’s a gym, too, which you may want to eschew and pound the streets instead, a far more interesting way to get your daily “required” steps in.
