Occupying a prime location in the shadow of the city’s iconic Harbour Bridge, Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection might just be one of Sydney’s best-placed hotels. Housed in a 108-year-old heritage-listed building that once served as a ferry station, this industrial-chic hotel has been elegantly updated to reflect Sydney’s contemporary, effortless glamour.

Naturally, Pier One’s location is its most obvious allure. Flanked by both Sydney Harbour and Walsh Bay, the hotel boasts magnificent views over the water and the city's urban landscape, while simultaneously being within walking distance of some of the most iconic attractions in not only Sydney but in all of Australia – the most notable of which, perhaps, is the extraordinary Sydney Opera House.

Original beams, ironwork and reclaimed timber are incorporated throughout the hotel, a homage to the harbour’s vibrant past that juxtaposes quite pleasantly with the contemporary interior design of the guestrooms. All accommodations feel wonderfully roomy (by Sydney standards, anyway) with floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the spaces with natural light. Dazzling views of Walsh Bay and Sydney Harbour certainly steal the show as far as eye-catching elements are concerned, but tasteful modern art, rich furnishings and nautical accents make the rooms’ interiors lovely to look at as well.

Sydney is well known for its exciting food scene, and the hotel is a superb spot to begin your culinary journey. The Gantry is a destination unto itself; laid-back and unhurried, this trendy harbourside spot is an excellent introduction to modern Australian cuisine – indulge in the restaurant’s tasting menu for a particularly memorable experience. Bar One is the hotel’s stylish lobby lounge which boasts attractive seating both indoors and out on a terrace overlooking the pier. An ambient crowd and killer cocktail list make it a no-fail option for kicking off the evening, whatever that may entail. We love that the hotel also packs picnic hampers for guests to enjoy in whichever corner of the city strikes their fancy – a sunny lunch gazing out at the harbour can be had just steps away.

Children are welcome at the hotel, though you won’t find many amenities geared specifically towards youngsters. Canine companions, however, get the star treatment with the hotel's “Puppy Package,” which includes perks aplenty such as direct access to the pier from your room (making early-morning walks a breeze) and an in-room doggy minibar.
