"Set in the heart of the King’s Cross area, Great Northern Hotel boasts sleeper carriage-inspired guestrooms, memorable dining and a stellar location for guests looking to explore London and beyond."

London's original railway hotel opened its doors over a century and a half ago in the heart of the King’s Cross area. Called Great Northern Hotel, this boutique establishment has been charming travellers since 1854. One step within, and it's easy to see why: the hotel at large channels all the magic of rail travel's golden age, while its location provides a fantastic launching pad for exploring London at large and beyond.

The hotel has just 91 rooms within, lending to the property an exclusive, private vibe. The accommodations are not particularly roomy – not that we'd expect it, this being London and all – but are nevertheless beautifully designed and thoughtfully styled. The charming spaces are inspired by the classic railway sleeper carriages of yesteryear and pay homage to them in a way that is both playful and elegant. Skip the Couchette guest rooms – the hotel's smallest options – in favour of an Edwardian, Heritage or Victorian room; the latter of which is the largest option...   Show more

Skip the Couchette guest rooms – the hotel's smallest options – in favour of an Edwardian, Heritage or Victorian room; the latter of which is the largest option of all. In the roomier accommodations, tall sash windows let in plenty of natural light, and many of these rooms have stellar views; book a space on the highest floor that you can in order to make the most of these vistas. Gorgeous wood panelling and walls set in shades of rich eggplant or pear green further the handsome aesthetic, while custom walnut furnishings and striking accents tie the spaces together beautifully.

Despite its small size, the hotel has three distinct venues for drinking and dining. On the first floor is Plum + Spilt Milk, which is a beautifully crafted interpretation of a railway restaurant that boasts a distinctly modern edge. All meals of the day can be had here (alongside brunch on weekends), and the menu features modern reinterpretations of beloved British classics. The quintessentially British Snug Bar is an eclectic spot for a drink when you feel so inclined, while GNH Bar & Terrace is an unparalleled railway bar that blends Belle Époque style with Art Deco design to create a uniquely memorable space.

When you're ready to get out and about, you could hardly ask for a better place from which to launch. Kings Cross, of course, is right next door, and the Saint Pancras Train Station is just across the street.
