Exhibition and Dinner - Washington DC
About the Exhibition:
Only about 35 paintings by Johannes Vermeer are known today. The National Gallery owns four works by or attributed to this beloved 17th-century Dutch artist, whose work embodies his era in exemplary fashion: a sense of reality, precise observation and a break with every sort of idealisation. Over and above this, Vermeer is linked by an illusionism in the rendering of the visible world that testifies to supreme technical mastery and raises his work to the level of fellow Dutch masters and contemporaries, such as Rembrandt. As Frederick Sommer once quipped, "The art of Vermeer must have been there the morning of creation." The tour will be conducted by Kenneth Goughnour, MPH, MCH, an art aficionado and long-time lover of Vermeer. In addition to Vermeer, Kenneth will show members the Ginevra de' Benci portrait, the only Leonardo Da Vinci artwork outside of Europe.
