Presented in parallel with the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, DOKU The Illusion is a solo presentation by Chinese-born artist Lu Yang, marking the 20th anniversary of the Espaces Louis Vuitton and the 10th anniversary of its Hors-les-murs programme.
Known for immersive virtual worlds inspired by Buddhist philosophy, video games, manga and anime, Lu Yang explores identity, reality and the possibilities of digital existence.
At Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia, the artist presents an immersive installation featuring original sculptures and DOKU The Illusion, the fourth chapter of his DOKU series. Combining live-action footage, AI-generated imagery and an evocative soundtrack, the film follows DOKU, a digital avatar based on the artist himself, on a surreal journey exploring life, death, freedom and rebirth.
The installation transforms the Espace into a futuristic sanctuary, where monumental LED imagery, Buddha sculptures and mirrored architecture create a dreamlike environment in which visitors become part of the artwork.
Born in Shanghai, China, Lu Yang lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from The China Academy of Art’s New Media Art Department and has gained international recognition for immersive environments combining computer-generated video, multimedia installations, sculpture and virtual performance.
In 2022, Lu Yang was named Artist of the Year by Deutsche Bank. His work has been exhibited at leading international institutions including Mori Art Museum, ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, PalaisPopulaire, Kunsthalle Basel, Fondation Louis Vuitton, K11 and Amant, as well as at the 59th Biennale di Venezia and Centre Pompidou.
His upcoming projects include a projection on The High Line in New York and New Humans: Memories of the Future at the New Museum in 2026.
The Fondation Louis Vuitton is dedicated to contemporary art and artists, as well as 20th-century works that have influenced them.
