The Best Late-Night Gallery Openings in London

The Best Late-Night Gallery Openings in London

With an international reach rivalling Paris and New York, London’s art scene is one of the world’s most dynamic, boasting more than 1,500 art galleries across the city. From renowned institutions such as the Tate and Royal Academy of Arts, to prestigious blue-chip galleries on Cork Street and independent East London art spaces, there is a plethora of exhibitions to visit this summer. Here is our curated guide to London’s finest late-opening galleries.

Tate Modern

Marking 25 years since its opening this summer, the Tate Modern has become one of London’s most influential cultural institutions of the 21st century. Located in a repurposed power station on the Southbank, the longstanding Tate Lates programme fills the space with art, DJ sets, screenings and workshops until 10pm on the last Friday of every month. All exhibitions stay open, and visitors can enjoy nibbles and a cocktail at the Terrace Bar. Be sure to catch the outlandish ‘Leigh Bowery!’ exhibition, which retells the trials and tribulations of the eponymous Australian performance artist and fashion designer.

The Barbican

The Barbican is one of London’s Brutalist treasures and hosts an impressive programme of arts, design, film and music. Featuring three cinema screens, extensive exhibition space, a theatre, music hall and garden conservatory, the space is open Thursdays and Fridays until 8pm. The Martini Bar, created in 2012 for a James Bond exhibition, serves delicious cocktails and comfortable hangout areas to discuss what’s on.

The Whitechapel Gallery

Positioned next door to Aldgate East tube station, the Whitechapel Gallery stays open every Thursday until 9pm, where all exhibitions, including paid ones, are open for free. ‘Hamad Butt: Apprehensions’ is on until September 7 and is the first major exhibition dedicated to the Pakistani-born, East-London-raised artist. The show explores Butt’s queer and diasporic experiences during the AIDS crisis in the UK.

Institute for Contemporary Arts

For a dose of both local and international culture, the ICA in Westminster is open until 9pm most evenings, including Sunday. Discover a rich selection of film screenings, exhibitions and talks before unwinding at the gallery bar, which serves negronis for £5 and closes at 10:30pm.
