Dog-Friendly European Adventures to Book Now

Dog-Friendly European Adventures to Book Now

While we get to experience the world, the same can’t always be said for our pets. Luxury travel can also apply to canine-friendly holidays, so instead of leaving them behind why not take your hounds with you? With 44 countries across the continent (of which 27 are part of the European Union), Europe is primed for a range of travel adventures. Our editors have selected some of the most beloved destinations for you and your pooches.

Germany: Bavarian Alps

In Germany’s Bavarian Alps, dog-friendly explorations are part of everyday life. Hike up towards the German-Austrian border, where you’ll discover meadows with wildflowers framed by the rugged peaks. While there are hiking sections that require on-lead walking, there are plenty of opportunities for your furry friends to roam free and run, Sound of Music-style, across the hills. We suggest embarking on one of the circular routes around Lauter and Ferchen Lakes, or from Mittenwald to Kranzberg and Ferchensee. Brecherspitz Circuit offers a mixture of terrains throughout the long, 14.5km route while, for a steeper challenge, the panoramic views from the top of Mount Kofel are well worth the ascent.

THE BAVARIAN ALPS ARE PERFECT FOR DOG-FRIENDLY ADVENTURES

Romania: Transylvania

Transylvania, a region in central Romania encircled by the Carpathian Mountains, offers a unique landscape that is ideal for dogs and humans alike. Enjoy scenic hikes with breathtaking views, discover hidden medieval towns or explore Bran Castle, a gothic fortress with ties to the infamous Dracula. We recommend heading to Grohotis Peak from Bratocea Pass, which offers a gentle trail through alpine meadows and forests.

Croatia: Dalmatian Coast

If you’re a fan of Dalmatians, you’ll know that they reportedly originated as hunting animals on this stretch of Croatian coast. Unfortunately, you might be disappointed if you’re expecting to see packs of the breed roaming the promenades, as they have since scattered – for reasons other than Cruella De Vil – across the continent.

The Dalmatian coastline itself remains a haven for dog-friendly adventures, with beautiful coastlines, relaxed harbour towns, and rugged hillsides. We recommend paying a visit to one of the designated dog-friendly spots such as Beach Bristak in Tribunj, Stara skola in Vodice, St. Clement's Peninsula in Zadar or Duilovo Beach in Split.

Where to Stay

If the above destinations aren’t enough, we suggest paying a visit to the stunning Swiss Lakes and Alps, Italy’s Dolomites or the West Highland Way in Scotland. Combine your adventures with a stay at an animal-friendly property without skimping on quality, such as Le Méridien Lav in Split or the Althoff Seehotel Ueberfahrt in Bavaria, with pet-friendly areas and a fully equipped spa to retreat to after a long hike.
