The Story Behind Cathay Pacific’s 80-Year Journey

The Story Behind Cathay Pacific’s 80-Year Journey

Few airlines are as closely tied to the identity of their home as Cathay Pacific. Born in Hong Kong in the post-war years, the airline has grown alongside a city defined by ambition and an outward-looking spirit - from a single aircraft serving regional routes into a network that now spans continents. Today, it stands as a refined expression of modern aviation, and for travellers who value not only where they go, but how they get there, its story is best understood by tracing it back to its roots.

A Legacy Born in Hong Kong

The story begins in 1946, against the backdrop of a recovering and rebuilding world, when two former military pilots - Roy Farrell and Sydney de Kantzow - founded Cathay Pacific with a Douglas DC-3 affectionately named Betsy.

Their vision was straightforward yet forward-looking: to connect Australia with China and play a part in reopening the region. Poised between East and West, Hong Kong is a natural gateway, one that the airline readily embraced as it began connecting people and places across the region. And, as the city grew into a global financial and cultural hub, the airline also evolved.

By the late 1950s, Cathay Pacific had introduced aircraft with both First and Economy cabins, extending its reach across Asia and into Australia. The arrival of jet aircraft in the 1960s marked a new era of speed and ambition, while the introduction of the Boeing 747 in 1979 transformed the airline into a global player.

80 Years of Thoughtful Evolution

Cathay Pacific’s approach to progress reflects a deep understanding of what travel really is. It’s not just getting from A to B, but about the experience around the journey itself. In an ever-changing world, Cathay Pacific has prided itself not on constant reinvention, but on refining what already works and paying meticulous attention to detail - in doing so building a reputation for consistency and reliability.

Across the decades, key moments have marked that journey. The arrival of new aircraft opened up new possibilities, while the retirement of long-serving fleets brought to a close chapters that had carried generations of travellers. When the Boeing 747-400 - celebrated for its size and range - took its final passenger flight in 2016, tickets sold out within minutes, reflecting the deep connection people had formed with an aircraft that helped define long-haul travel.

The introduction of the brushwing logo in 2015 distilled a sense of movement and purpose into a single, enduring symbol. While more recently, the redesigned Boeing 777-300ER cabins reflect a renewed focus on comfort, privacy and considered design - recognising how travel has evolved, while preserving the quiet confidence that has long defined the Cathay Pacific experience.

Design as a Living Archive

Throughout the decades, design has served as a visual language for Cathay Pacific - expressing both its global outlook and its local roots. Early uniforms balanced practicality with a professional image, drawing on military tailoring. From the early 1960s, however, they evolved to feature a distinctive red palette for female cabin crew. The colour conveyed warmth and confidence, while also holding positive cultural associations. In addition, meaning was embedded in the details, blending Chinese influences with international fashion. Frog fastenings on the white blouse and cheongsam-inspired side slits on the skirt added a subtle sense of place - even at 35,000 feet.

This balance between tradition and modernity was further refined by Hong Kong couturier Eddie Lau, who developed several iterations of the uniform across the 1990s and 2000s. His designs nodded to the airline’s heritage while introducing a slimmer silhouette and more understated palette - all while maintaining the same sense of elegance and functionality.

As part of its 80th anniversary, Cathay Pacific revisits these uniforms with hundreds of cabin crew and ground staff wearing vintage designs throughout 2026, bringing to life an eye-catching element of the airline’s rich history. In parallel, a specially commissioned aircraft livery, which revives the green-and-white tones of earlier decades while incorporating contemporary artistic expression, celebrates both the airline’s past and Hong Kong’s evolving creative landscape.

A Timeless Perspective

Eighty years on, Cathay Pacific is a global airline with a distinctly local soul - connecting Hong Kong to the world while carrying the character of the city with it. Behind every aircraft, design decision and operational detail are the people who bring it to life. They embody a culture where pride is expressed not through grand gestures, but through quiet precision and consistency - an approach that has shaped the airline’s reputation over time.

Ultimately, Cathay Pacific’s story isn’t defined by milestones alone, but by the journey towards them. Guided by attention to detail and a clear sense of direction, that journey remains central to what Cathay Pacific represents today, and where it goes next.
