A Movie Lover’s Guide to London

A Movie Lover’s Guide to London

One of the most diverse and storied cities on earth, London provides a rich source of inspiration for filmmakers. Its streets are a tangle of royal palaces, manicured parks, atmospheric mews houses, high rises and gritty warehouses, a compelling setting for everything from pulse-raising thrillers to romances. As the BFI’s Short Film Festival 2025 returns to the South Bank Centre between 17 and 26 January, we take a look at some of the most iconic film locations around the city.

Notting Hill

The candy-coloured houses and Portobello Road antiques market make this well-heeled borough one of the most appealing in London. It plays a key role in the 1999 romantic comedy Notting Hill, which followed the unlikely love story of an American actress falling in love with the self-effacing owner of a local bookshop.

Borough Market

The city’s oldest fruit and vegetable market may now mostly stock speciality charcuterie and curios such as ostrich eggs but Bridget Jones’ flat – where she fed her love interest, Mr Darcy, blue soup in the 2001 film Bridget Jones’ Diary– remains above The Globe Tavern, a raucous pub dating back to the 1800s.

Buckingham Palace

Helen Mirren’s Oscar-winning appearance in The Queen is set against the backdrop of Buckingham Palace’s striking towers. They also pop up in childhood favourites such as The BFG and Mary Poppins, as well as comedies such as Johnny English.

King’s Cross Station

All aboard the Hogwarts Express, which chugs out of platforms four and five in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001). The fictional platform 9¾ is marked by a sign on the wall on the station’s main concourse, perfect for a Potter-themed photo opportunity.

The Old War Office

Recently renovated and converted into Raffles London at The OWO, this baroque fortress was the birthplace of MI5 and MI6, so it’s appropriate that it has featured in no less than five Bond films. It appears as the MI6 base in: Octopussy (1983), A View to a Kill (1985), Licence to Kill (1989), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015).
