After remaining closed for nearly a decade, the legendary Waldorf Astoria New York reopens. The Manhattan grande dame closed its doors in 2017 to undergo extensive, multi-phase renovations. Ensuing delays postponed the reopening for far longer than the originally anticipated two to three years, but the hotel’s ambitious reimagining promises to be worth the wait.

Perhaps the most daring of the Waldorf Astoria’s renovations is the change in its capacity. Whereas the hotel once boasted over 1,400 rooms and suites, it now comprises just 375 accommodations in all. As a result, the new Waldorf Astoria now offers some of the most spacious guest rooms in the Big Apple. While the hotel’s original Art Deco architecture remains intact, the guest rooms have been reimagined to exude modern sophistication, albeit with the brand’s signature timeless grace. The intention was to create spaces with an intimate, residential feel; in that regard, the execution was flawless. Set in almost monochromatic colour palettes of soft whites, taupes and creams with complementary accents of pale mint green, the rooms are graceful, calm respites from the hubbub of the city. Tastefully curated artworks are elegantly displayed on illuminated shelves in the sitting areas, and handsome bathrooms feature deep soaking tubs. At 965 square feet, the Park Avenue View Premier One Bedroom Suite is the hotel’s finest accommodation and features magnificent views over the street that shares its name.

The Waldorf Astoria brand has forever been synonymous with fine dining, and the hotel’s newest restaurants promise to continue this legacy. James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Anthony is the culinary force behind Lex Yard: a two-storey, Art Deco-inspired American Brasserie. Elevated American fare is the cuisine of choice here, with an emphasis on the farm-to-table approach. Reimagined traditional dishes and a sophisticated Wagashi tea will be available at an as-of-yet unnamed Japanese restaurant, while the beloved Peacock Alley Bar is a prime spot for a drink or a bite at any time of the day. Some historic notables in the hotel’s illustrious history include it being credited as the first modern hotel to offer room service along with other industry advancements, like restaurant reservations and full electrical wiring.

Wellness amenities at the Waldorf Astoria are light, bright and every bit as polished as the rest of the hotel.
