Contemporary Chinese art has a strong presence in the hotel from sculptures and silk works to the enormous face painted by Ling Jianwhich, one of the first things you see upon setting foot in the hotel. Guestrooms are stylish, Art-Deco inspired and resplendent in peacock blue with accents of bronze and burnt umber. Décor is streamlined and sophisticated, and intelligent high-tech design means that just about everything can be controlled and customized from a tablet. A lucky handful of rooms and suites have good-sized private terraces; those that don’t have enormous full-wall windows as an appealing consolation prize.

Though the hotel has just 171 guestrooms and tends more towards a boutique vibe, it manages to retain many of the perks you’d expect from a much larger (but equally luxe) hotel.
