Architecturally striking inside and out, the wooden and glass buildings (there are four) create a dreamy chalet-style property, cosily nestled within the mountains. Rooms and suites are modern and comfortable with grey slate floors and light wooden furnishings. There’s a red and white theme – à la Swiss flag – throughout. Each room or suite comes with its own gas fireplace, a Nespresso machine, comfortable furniture and nice extras like a flask to fill and take on your expeditions. Most rooms have balconies, many of which face the mountains and the cable car ferrying skiers up (and sometimes down) the mountainside. Bathrooms come with free-standing baths and separate rain showers.
When it’s time to dine, there’s a choice of several venues, some of which are seasonal only. Start your evening in the W Living Room, the perfect place to watch the setting sun as you nurse a cocktail or crisp glass of chilled, local wine. Among the restaurants are Asian-Fusion U-YAMA Sushi Bar and Eat-Hola Tapas Bar, which is helmed by Michelin-starred Chef Sergi Arola. For a post-prandial drink, head back to the Living Room, where the resident DJ slings tunes till the wee hours. Cigar lovers can slip off to the adjacent cigar lounge.
Mountain sports, whatever the season, are demanding enough on the body to warrant spending time in the AWAY Spa – the only one of its kind in Switzerland. Here, there are nine treatment rooms, and there’s an indoor/outdoor heated pool with a whirlpool, sauna and steam room. The gym is open 24 hours, and there’s a yoga room where classes are held twice daily; they cost extra, but it’s a great daily warm-up (or down).
