"You can’t beat the location of the W Montreal, situated in one of the city’s most centrally located and picture-pretty squares, Victoria Square, within what’s known as the International Quarter."

It’s a short walk to many of the best restaurants in town, and it’s conveniently connected to the metro as well as the Palais des Congrès (the main convention centre) and many of downtown’s main shopping districts by an underground tunnel, something you’ll thank your lucky stars for if you’re here on a winter’s day. Notre-Dame Basilica is minutes away.

The W’s historic facade – a Bank of Canada building of old – belies its modern and eclectic interiors, for this is a hip and groovy venue with vibrant design features, live music at given times, art expos, slick service, dining venues that encourage mingling and many features that appeal to a less traditional crowd. On the flip side, there are many nods to the hotel’s former glory: the check-in desk and the cashier’s desk stand where the tellers’ desks once stood, and the use of gold as an accent hue harkens back to what was, no doubt, stashed here back in the day.

Starting with the rooms. Entry-level “Cozy” rooms are what the name suggests and have no views to speak of, so if you want a vista of the square or the park, you’ll have to take it up a notch to a “Wonderful”, “Fantastic” – and a few other such adjectives – all the way to a “Wow” suite (with a balcony). Regardless of the size, all rooms come with coffee machines, plenty of mod-cons, mirrors, geometric carpets and a desk. The W MixBar is also as standard in every room, indicative of the W Hotel Group’s penchant for all things “cocktail hour”; it’s stocked up to allow guests to make their favourite concoction in the room should they so wish.

But doing so would mean missing out on the chance to mix and mingle with the local crowd and other guests in the Living Room, where tapas and cocktails are available around the clock. For a wonderful Italian meal, head to Tbsp., or, if you prefer to dine in your room, you have only to push the “Whenever/Whatever” button on your room phone.
