As one Australian journalist put it, the W Melbourne couldn’t have opened at a worse time; he pondered whether the W stood for “Why”? Without a doubt, it was the worst of luck, but, like many other things that were in the works of being built – and then Covid came along – the W opening went ahead, regardless. Of course, Australians themselves could still travel, especially resident Victorians, so the hotel launched in all its magnificence to a smaller, but discerning, audience. If you’re reading this now, it’s because the world has opened up once again. Book into this property, and prepare to be “Wowed”, literally, in true W style.

The 294 room hotel, welcoming guests as of Feb 2021, is housed within the East Tower of the arresting, tripodic, $1.25 billion (Aussie dollar) Collins Arch development that encompasses an entire city block. W, the more mood-inspiring and funky spinoff of the Westin brand, is also part of the majestic Marriott conglomerate, and it lives up to its creds.

Dubbed “Wow” and “Extreme Wow”, the suites clearly denote the hotel’s youthful spirit. Go for the latter, and you’ll have a balcony that’s 40 sq m in size (430 sq ft) – bigger than your average room in downtown Melbourne, with dreamy views over the city and Yarra River. Entry-level rooms, called Cozy, are 35 sq m, and they come with Nespresso machines, a minibar allowing guests to shake a cocktail (or two) to their own standards, a black marble bathroom with a rainfall shower and Davines amenities. Pops of colour bring life to the rooms that use subdued lighting to create an atmosphere that’s designed to inspire you to get out and party, starting in the hotel itself.

And why not? The atmosphere within the hotel’s public areas really is quite dynamic. Start your evening at Curious, the hotel’s eclectic bar whose ceiling resembles a moodily-lit piano keyboard, and you can expect the ultimate in attention from the bartenders who’ll never take their eyes off your drink. Nibbles are available here, but save yourself for wonderful things to come, in Lollo, perhaps, with its curated Australian menus – open from morning to night. Otherwise, Warabi is the hotel’s superb Japanese restaurant, also promising a meal to remember with beer and sake to pair with your dish of choice.

There’s a gym that’s open 24-hours and a smallish indoor pool that has its own bar. Here on the 14th floor, there are some superb city views to be taken in from the massive windows.
