Housed within the neo-Renaissance Drechsler Palace on the UNESCO World Heritage site Andrássy Avenue, W Budapest is a masterclass in modern luxury that’s seamlessly woven into the historic fabric of the city. The W Hotels brand’s debut property in Eastern Europe opened in 2023 – and was an immediate success. There’s plenty to thank for that: its prime address directly across from the Hungarian State Opera House, for one; its bold old-meets-new design; and its curated assortment of plush amenities all make for a spectacular stay.

The hotel’s memorable façade has been kept lovingly intact; behind it, spaces designed by firms Bánáti + Hartvig and Bowler James Brindley expertly blend influences both historic and modern. The resulting ambience is splashy, chic and utterly unforgettable. There are 151 accommodations in all, each of which pays homage to the city’s past while channelling bold contemporary design. At entry level, you’ll find Cozy Rooms, which, despite their name, start at a reasonable 32 square metres. At the upper end of the spectrum are the property’s 45 suites, which feature cheeky names like Fantastic, Wow and Extreme Wow. All are meticulously designed, with alluring colour schemes that vary widely: some spaces are awash in shades of blue interspersed with pops of scarlet, while others are almost entirely clad in handsome wood panelling. Particularly worthy of note is the coveted Extreme Wow Suite, which is a vision set almost entirely in black. Art Deco accents, fabulous bathrooms and separate seating areas can be found in every space, while some of the more indulgent options feature perks like balconies, fireplaces, fabulously curated artwork and private bars.

Downstairs, Le Petit Beefbar Budapest blends elegant bistro looks with a cosmopolitan vibe – and, of course, with the legacy of Beefbar at large. You’re visiting for the steaks, naturally, but be sure not to overlook the street food and sushi menus as well. Nearby is the W Lounge, an eye-catching space set in glamorous jewel tones that hosts a buzzy social scene and late-night DJ sets. In the basement, you’ll find Society25: a dance and nightclub spot with a speakeasy vibe, though one couldn’t exactly call the venue a secret.

The AWAY Spa is a must-visit, as much for your wellness needs as to marvel at the WET Area. Inspired by Hungarian bathhouses, the space is located in the vaults and features magnificent original ceilings and a cleverly designed chequered-bottom pool. You’ll also find a fitness centre kitted out with a decent assortment of gear, a beauty bar and five treatment rooms.
