The Ticino fare found at the hotel's namesake eatery – The Principe Leopoldo Restaurant – is upscale and excellent, if not a bit overpriced. The elegant bar is worth a visit as well, especially when there’s live music. If and when you find yourself in need of a little more culinary variety, you’ll find plenty of other restaurants within walking distance: try Meta for a classy lunch with views of the water or Addis Ristorante for some killer Ethiopian food.
DOT Spa (the hotel’s go-to place for all things wellness and beauty) is particularly noteworthy, as it’s a veritable haven of tranquillity and pampering. Tennis courts, a well-equipped fitness centre and two heated outdoor pools mean there are plenty of ways to stay active without even having to leave the hotel although, if you’re adventurous, you’ll want to be sure to explore the myriad activities on the water and in the mountains beyond.
You can spend your days hiking your heart out if you so choose, but be sure to leave time to explore Lugano itself. Visit the enchanting Swissminatur, which is – as its name suggests – a miniature version of Switzerland. (Though not too miniature – it spans over 14,000 metres.) Stop by the mediaeval cathedral of San Lorenzo, have a picnic in the sprawling Parco Civico-Ciani and go for a tasting at the Alprose Chocolate Museum, which is a must-visit for any kid (or grown-up) with a sweet tooth.
