Since its debut in the 1800s, Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa has remained a grand dame in the Swiss resort town of Interlaken. The hotel gazes out at the splendidly scenic Jungfrau peak and is placed perfectly for both superior views and easy mountain access. The lovely Höhematte Park is within shouting distance, and Interlaken itself could not be better located for exploring the dramatic landscape, whether that means heading deep into the Bernese Alps or being whisked up to Harder Kulm in the nearby funicular.

Everything about The Belle Époque-style Victoria-Jungfrau is polished and elegant, and guest rooms are no exception. Delicate bedrooms are airy and bright, set in soft shades and flooded with natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows. Some rooms feel beautifully classical with their cool, dreamy pastels and graceful period furniture, while others are more contemporary (but equally luxe), with modern furnishings and crisp lines. All are plush as can be and supremely comfortable with top-notch everything. Palatial suites are even more indulgent and, at 212 square metres, the sunny Tower Suite is the most expansive of them all.

Breakfast at the hotel is a lavish affair, with a generous spread designed to fortify even the most ambitious mountaineer. For the day’s later meals, you’ll have a handful of options to choose from. Contemporary takes on Swiss and international classics can be enjoyed at La Terrasse Brasserie, while health-conscious meals make up the menu at Spa Bistro, The high-ceilinged Ristorante e Pizzeria is the hotel’s Italian restaurant: expect familiar classics, an excellent wine list and some very good pizza. Radius by Stefan Beer is not to be missed: from Tuesday through Saturday this restaurant offers the opportunity for an unforgettable dinner. The cuisine is creative and contemporary, and – impressively – all ingredients used are sourced from within fifty kilometres. You can begin your day with a cup of coffee on the beautiful Victoria Terrace and end it at Victoria Bar, where you’ll find every cocktail your heart could possibly desire – the spot has been named among the 20 best hotel bars in Switzerland.

The hotel’s crown jewel is its 5,500-square-metre spa. A temple to all things beauty and wellness, it has a stunning indoor pool sprawled under a skylight at its heart and a host of facilities both indoors and out.
