The tree-lined Avenida da Liberdade is one of Lisbon’s main thoroughfares – and one of its most iconic. Originally a park for 18th-century Portuguese nobility, it has since become one of Europe’s most desirable and prestigious shopping destinations. The boulevard is also famous for its fine dining and boutique hotels – one of which is the intimate Valverde Hotel – a romantic little escape in the heart of Portugal’s capital.

Behind a 19th-century facade, the Valverde Hotel is full of character with a highly curated assortment of dramatic fabrics, retro furniture, art-deco rugs and antique artwork. The aesthetic feels swanky and designer – an apt ambience, given its location.

The hotel’s 25 rooms and suites are a grab-bag of shapes and sizes; if you want genuinely spacious accommodations, opt for one of the two suites at the top of the hotel. Otherwise, you’ll be in tight quarters – the twenty-square-metre Mini Rooms in particular feel rather cramped, though, to their credit, they each come with a small balcony. At 25 to 30 square metres, Classic Rooms are more comfortably sized, and all feel chic with sloping ceilings, gorgeous brocades and warm, cosy colour schemes. Well-appointed black and white bathrooms are roomy and stylish and some have stand-alone cast iron tubs. Children are welcome at the hotel as well, though the small rooms and romantic vibe makes it feel better suited for couples.

Five o’clock Tea (or five PM cocktails) can be enjoyed on the hotel’s beautiful patio – you’ll also find the outdoor pool there. There’s a fitness room and a little film room in addition to a sitting room off reception – no shortage of places to relax here. There’s no spa within the hotel, but a massage therapist is available for in-room services.

On the hotel’s ground floor is the lovely Sítio Valverde restaurant. While the menu is not expansive, the predominantly Portuguese specialities served there are well-chosen, ranging from comfort foods such as mushroom risotto to more adventurous dishes like Polvo e Alho Negro - octopus and black garlic. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the brasserie-style restaurant, but take advantage of the surrounding culinary scene; you’ll be spoilt for choice with over 200 restaurants within less than half a mile of the hotel.

Also close at hand are a plethora of gardens and historical monuments in addition to nightlife hotspots (the Red Frog Speakeasy is a must-visit). The classic Teatro Tivoli and a number of museums are nearby – but be sure to leave plenty of time to wander Avenida da Liberdade itself.
