The St. Regis New York is a Fifth Avenue landmark founded over a century ago by John Jacob Astor IV – a prominent member of the Astor family, who vowed to create ‘the finest hotel in the world’. Today, his vision has been brought up to date with 21st-century technology, and it’s still one of the best addresses in town.
Located at Fifth Avenue and 55th Street, the hotel is near Central Park and many cultural attractions including the Museum Of Modern Art, Broadway, Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as the city's finest shops and world-class restaurants.
At the forefront of design, The St. Regis New York celebrates its fine architecture and original features and adds a touch of modern glamour. The ornate brass entranceway and the red-carpeted lobby are very glamorous. Oodles of marble, gilded mouldings and ceilings painted with images of blue skies set the backdrop for crystal chandeliers and echo an era of old-school panache.
Guest rooms fall into three categories: Superior, Deluxe and Grand Luxe, while the Designer Suites have been created in partnership with the luxury brands Dior and Bentley and are inspired by historical figures and places like Caroline Astor and Milan. Whichever room or suite you opt for, there are bedside controls that operate the lights and air-conditioning, televisions and Bose stereo systems and Italian marble bathrooms. The legendary St. Regis butler service is available around the clock. There’s also the use of the Bentley courtesy car (for journeys up to 10 blocks away, subject to availability).
Epicurean delights are served up by Astor Court and the famous King Cole Bar, including daily afternoon tea, one of the Astor family’s favourite traditions. It’s the perfect interlude, especially if you try one of the legendary Red Snapper cocktails, between a morning of sightseeing and relaxing before your evening schedule – whatever that may entail.
For on-site recreation, there are digital books featuring titles from the hotel’s library, and health-conscious travellers can head to the state-of-the-art fitness centre. Though the hotel has a small fitness centre that is open 24 hours a day, there is no spa; thankfully, there are many nearby to dip in and out of, day and night.
