When César Ritz set out to create The Ritz London, he dreamt of a hotel that offered unparalleled luxury and opulence in the very heart of London. He achieved just that; when the hotel’s doors first opened in 1906 it was widely regarded as one of the finest in the world – a reputation it maintains to this day.

The hotel’s neoclassical façade and perfectly manicured grounds are the very picture of elegance and interiors are equally grand. The chandeliers and Louis XVI décor of the stunning lobby set the stage for the lavish guestrooms which are at once both sumptuous and inviting. Tasteful pastel shades dominate the aesthetic, with gilded accents, gorgeous fabrics and beautiful antique pieces completing the scene. Marble makes a statement in both fireplaces and in the all-marble bathrooms, and rooms as a whole feel delightfully over-the-top. Posh suites are worth the upgrade and are regal as can be, while the Signature Suites boast next-level opulence including an airport transfer in the Ritz Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Be prepared for strict dress codes at mealtimes – “puttin’ on The Ritz” required. Dine at the hotel’s namesake restaurant which claims to boast one of the most beautiful dining rooms in the world. A bold claim, certainly, but one that’s hard to argue – mirrored walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, dazzling chandeliers and columns that soar to high ceilings create a deeply memorable venue – and that’s without even speaking of the food. The Michelin-starred restaurant offers epicurean tasting menus that change with the seasons to highlight the region’s freshest produce, plus a traditional breakfast with four menus to choose from. Afternoon Tea in the Palm Court is a lavish affair, complete with music from the resident harpist and pianist. End teatime with a glass of champagne before moving to the intimate Rivoli Bar where you’ll find sultry lighting, leopard-print chairs and (naturally) more champagne.

Though the finery of the hotel certainly does not conjure up images of a family-friendly hotel, kids are well catered to with a variety of activities and thoughtful gifts. A stay at this lavish hotel is a treat; as such, you may well find yourself not wanting to leave the grounds. When you’re ready to, though, its Piccadilly location could hardly be better placed for exploring all that London has to offer.
