Petrolheads, motor vehicle aficionados, ex-hippies and Volkswagen lovers will all probably find themselves here, in Wolfsburg, at some point in their lives – more specifically here at the Autostadt with its VW museum, the opportunity for factory tours and its massive cinema. The Ritz-Carlton sits within the complex alongside the harbour basin, providing a seriously salubrious venue to spend any free time you’ll have while you’re in town. With the city’s only Michelin-starred restaurant, Aqua, and suites, rooms, clubrooms, a pool, gym and a spa, this is one classy place to call home.

While the views are perhaps not the most romantic – Autostadt park or the power plant over the water – choosing a room here is a fairly straightforward affair, as all are similarly appointed with nice touches like Asprey amenities, heated bathroom floors, separate tubs and showers and a choice of twin-bedded and king-bedded rooms. Furnishings are modern and functional with mod-cons aplenty, as you would expect in a town that’s all about innovation, form and function. Upgrade to a club room (or suite) if you like breakfast included with your package, but as alcoholic drinks aren’t included here (coffee and cake, rather), you’ll have to weigh up the benefits.

Not to worry, you’ll find something stiffer than that at Newman’s Bar on the lobby level. Designed as a swanky American-style venue, this is a nice place for a classic cocktail like the carefully chosen gins to go with your tonic, or something more groovy, as well as a lite bite. There’s also a very suitable farm-to-table restaurant, called Terra, that serves a mean steak (and more) and, the very best dining establishment in town: Aqua. You’ll need to book as far in advance as possible for this special venue that serves only two multi-course menus: Big Travel and Little Travel.

Set aside some time to relax at the spa, even if you can only squeeze in a facial. There’s also a very nice gym and an outdoor floating pool in the harbour basin that’s heated. Meanwhile, you won’t be far from the famous Wolfsburg Castle, well worth a visit. Parking at the hotel is free, so exploring the vicinity by car is a good option.
