Soaring three hundred metres above the Roppongi district, the Midtown Tower is home to an art museum, a department store and a luxury hotel. Wherever you look within the Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo, views take centre stage, and for good reason, as it lays claim to the building’s top nine floors. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that – from limo service in a Rolls-Royce Phantom to the 45th-floor lobby – this is a hotel in which everything is heightened. The Roppongi district is worth exploring. The area is well known for its nightlife scene, in addition to its whiskey, so have a few drinks while you’re at it.

Within, contemporary rooms are an aesthetically pleasing blend of Eastern and Western influences. Lacquered sycamore and walls adorned with kimono fabric create spaces that are understated but deeply comfortable. A tech-savvy bedside panel controls lights, curtains and – most conveniently of all – the room’s ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign. Large marble and wood bathrooms have deep, comfortable tubs. If you’re travelling with children, book the Carlton Suite and make a Night Safari reservation; you’ll arrive at your suite to find a pitched tent filled with activities.

The Ritz has seven restaurants, the crown jewel of their collection being the Michelin-starred Héritage by Kei. Located on the 45th floor, this restaurant serves French cuisine with a nod to Japanese gastronomy, making it a must-visit. At Hinokizaka, you’ll find separate dining areas for meals of kaiseki, sushi, tempura or teppanyaki. The Towers restaurant serves traditional French fare with sweeping city views, while The Ritz-Carlton Café & Deli makes it easy to grab a coffee and pastry or a light meal when you’re on the go. The Bar has an extensive whiskey collection (and bottle lockers for VIP guests), and the ultra-chic La Boutique serves stylish Parisian confectionery. As always, the signature Ritz afternoon tea in the lobby lounge is not to be missed.

The spa’s view of the skyline goes unappreciated during a massage, but can be seen from the hot tubs and 66-foot pool. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Fuji from the treadmills in the fitness centre. There’s much to do within the building if you aren’t keen to leave, from cultural activities like sake tasting and flower arranging to more vigorous activities like cycling and karate classes. Kids can pick up a ‘stamp rally’ scavenger hunt that helps them explore the hotel and earn a prize.
