This grande dame of Nob Hill, The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco, oozes elegance from all pores. Centrally located just two blocks from Union Square, the 1909 landmark beckons visitors who may otherwise be just strolling by, or even riding the cable car which passes directly alongside the hotel’s front door.

The lobby itself is beautiful, swimming in marble with its vast columns, thick accent rugs and twinkling chandeliers. You’ll be forgiven for not feeling an immediate sense of place, however, as this isn’t really the techy atmosphere you’d expect here in the City by the Bay.

But who cares? Revel in the luxury. Contemporary and sleek, the choice of art pieces that are everywhere, the glorious floral arrangements and the rich fabrics and furnishings used throughout the property ensure this hotel is supremely accommodating.

The rooms themselves are super-smart and comfortable. When it comes to choosing one from another, all are super-smart and nicely appointed; decor doesn’t vary much from room to room: harmonious hues of blue and white is the scheme of choice. Entry-level rooms are large at 400 sq ft (38 sq m) and, while not exactly high-tech (no iPad for room controls, for example), there are espresso machines, Asprey bath amenities and all the creature comforts you would expect from the Ritz-Carlton.

Of course, as there are Club Rooms available here, a room with access to those services is usually well worth the upgrade. Drinks are included here in the lounge, as is breakfast, a light lunch, hor's d'oeuvres, dessert and a special concierge who should be able to swing tickets for you to most of the shows you should have booked before as well as the best tables in town.

But you may not need to dine outside, as Chef Michael Rotondo of Charlie Trotter fame heads up the acclaimed Parallel 37 restaurant, with its casual-chic atmosphere and menu of superb Californian fare with Asian influences. If you’re hungry, the Chef’s Tasting Menu is worth every bite, on every level.

Wine lovers won’t be able to pass on the chance to enjoy a wine flight in the boudoir-like JCB Tasting Lounge or, if a martini’s more your thing, The Lounge is equally inviting.

Whether you overindulge or not, Spa L’OCCITANE by the Bay will have the right remedy, and there’s a 24-hour fitness centre with separate men's and women's steam rooms for a purge, day or night.
