Set in a turn-of-the-century industrial building in the heart of beautiful Georgetown, the Ritz Carlton cuts a striking figure. It’s not every day that you encounter a boutique hotel with a towering brick smokestack; this is, in fact, one of the world's very few such places. Its unconventional exterior is not the only thing that makes this hotel unique; the history-drenched building brilliantly melds its historical roots with chic modernity (think old school red brick walls alongside contemporary designer furniture) which gives it a stylish nostalgia that sets it apart from many of its Ritz-Carlton counterparts.

Perfectly boutique (and wonderfully uncrowded), the hotel has just 86 rooms and suites, all of which are decently sized for a city property such as this. Across the board, you can expect stunning Georgetown views from large windows that flood the well-appointed spaces with natural light. Rooms are decorated in crisp, calming tones: dark browns, creams and taupes with dashes of colour here and there added by a bright throw pillow or a bouquet of fresh flowers. Large bathrooms are done up in limestone and slate, and the ones found in the suites are even lovelier. Suites give the impression of being delightfully stylish apartments, and some have private terraces or cosy fireplaces. We particularly like the ones that have views of the water in addition to the city.

The dining options at the Georgetown outpost are somewhat more limited than you’d find in most other Ritz-Carltons: you’ll have just two venues to choose from for food and drink. Nevertheless, it’s a lovely duo: Degrees Bistro has a beautifully rustic dining room, the industrial-chic style of which echoes the hotel's historical roots. A scrumptious menu of all-day dining highlights local ingredients, and the artisanal cocktails are particularly good. The cosy Living Room (as the hotel's lobby is called) is deliciously inviting with its exposed brick walls, plush furniture and crackling fireplace – a perfect spot for a martini and appetizer before dinner.

The hotel's fitness centre is small but impressive, with state-of-the-art equipment and Peloton bikes in a decidedly chic space. The indulgent spa is also a treat with a seasonal menu designed to keep you feeling rested and rejuvenated as the weather changes.
