The tranquillity of the Toranomon district of Minato, Tokyo, belies its central location – a sweet spot between cultural, governmental and business hubs. The area is attractively close to the neighbourhoods of Roppongi, Akasaka and Ginza, and has excellent public transportation for exploring both near and far. Within this surprisingly quiet enclave is The Okura Tokyo: a landmark that traces its history of hospitality back to 1962, when it began its life as Hotel Okura Tokyo.

Two contemporary towers comprise the hotel, with interiors designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, the son of the architect responsible for the original hotel. The lobby honours that of its first iteration; beyond it, 508 guest rooms await. These are split between two buildings: the Prestige and the Heritage. Set within a 41-storey building, The Prestige Tower favours a contemporary luxury aesthetic and treats guests to panoramic city views from its upper floors. The Heritage Wing, by comparison, is more intimate, with just 17 floors and 140 guest rooms. There, traditional Japanese aesthetics take centre stage: imagine a historic ryokan guesthouse elegantly updated with modern luxuries. Regardless of which you choose, expect refined spaces with clean lines, organic colour palettes and a restrained design scheme that echoes the hotel’s tranquillity.

An impressive array of options for drinking and dining ensures guests have plenty of variety come mealtimes. One of the hotel’s two signature restaurants is located on the fourth floor of the Okura Heritage Wing; called Yamazato, this is the place for traditional Japanese fine dining, complete with a sushi counter and tea ceremony room. Sanzaka, the second of the signature offerings, is found on the 41st floor of the Prestige Tower. Sazanka is a must-visit as much for the theatrical teppanyaki experience and refined flavours as for the spectacular city views. Elsewhere in the hotel, you’ll find the Cantonese Toh-Ka-Lin and Nouvelle Epoque, which serves upscale French cuisine with a Japanese twist. You’ll have two bars to choose from: the Orchid Bar, which celebrates the hotel’s history and heritage, and Starlight – our personal favourite, thanks to its panoramic views and prime sunset-watching seats.

Guests of the hotel have access to Okura Fitness & Spa: an urban sanctuary with fabulous views, a well-equipped gym and a heated indoor 25-metre pool. Beyond the expected wellness offerings is an unexpected – and thoroughly delightful – perk: the Okura Museum of Art. Established in 1917, it’s the oldest existing privately operated museum in Japan and a must-visit thanks to its collection of around 2,500 pieces, three of which are designated national treasures.
