Set in a gorgeous French Renaissance building, The Bellevue is a landmark unto itself. This Philadelphia hotel – which was built in 1904 – is on the National Register of Historic Places, and its storied legacy is equally impressive. At the time of its opening, it was a groundbreaking establishment touted as the nation’s finest hotel to date. No expense was spared in its construction, and many of the gorgeous original features remain – including lighting fixtures designed by none other than Thomas Edison himself. The hotel has been carefully and lovingly restored over its lifetime, but though it has been brought squarely into the contemporary hotel scene, it retains much of its original charm. Its location on Broad Street is also hard to beat, especially for lovers of the arts: it’s set smack in the heart of the city’s theatre district and is enveloped by numerous upscale shopping and dining destinations as well.

The hotel’s 172 rooms channel its original grandeur in their interior design, but not overwhelmingly so: the opulence is tempered by tastefully restrained decor and clean contemporary lines. We love the 14-foot ceilings (which make the spaces feel even larger) as well as the addition of vintage artwork and photography prints that honour the city's rich history. Suites are rather more regal options; we love the tufted headboards, sculpted chaise lounges and large windows that flood the rooms with natural light.

XIX (NINETEEN) Restaurant – which is fittingly set on the 19th floor – is a boon for foodies staying at the hotel. The dining area is split between three distinct areas, each with its own personality. In the Cameo Room, you’ll find everything from breakfast and afternoon tea to elevated lunches and edible flower arrangements if your stay happens to coincide with the Philadelphia Flower Show. At The Lounge, a crackling fire and plush leather booths create an intimate and inviting atmosphere for a happy hour cocktail or a glass of wine. The showstopper, undoubtedly, is the extravagant (and delightfully over-the-top) Pearl Room, in which an enormous chandelier suspended from the soaring ceiling is draped in swathes of sculpture resembling oversised strands of pearls. Large curtains drape windows overlooking the Avenue of the Arts, and while the restaurant serves all meals of the day, The Pearl Room is a particularly lovely spot from which to watch the sunset – snag a balcony table for the best seats in the house.
