Set in an 1881 building that had the distinction of being one of New York City‘s very first skyscrapers, the Beekman, a Thompson Hotel, is impressive to its bones. Located in the FiDi neighbourhood (NYC’s financial district), this sophisticated getaway offers a less touristy environment than those hotels found in midtown, while still being in a prime spot for seeing the sights. Cross the stately building’s legendary threshold to be swept back in time to the golden age of travel for a hotel stay you won’t soon forget.

Vintage grandiosity is on full display in the main areas of the hotel, an aesthetic that, in the guestrooms, is pleasantly simplified and given a tasteful dose of modernity. Despite its intimate feel, The Beekman boasts 287 guestrooms, of which 38 are suites. All are elegant, alluring and beautifully styled with custom-made beds, bespoke vintage furnishings and hand-picked artwork. Unexpected vibrance is lent by jewel-toned rugs and accents, while large windows, high ceilings and crisp white walls keep the spaces feeling large and airy. Bathrooms are tiled with Carrara marble, and oversized rain showers are state-of-the-art. For a truly memorable stay, book one of the hotel’s two signature Penthouse Suites. Set within the hotel's two turrets, these magnificent spaces feel like lavish multi-storey apartments, and each boasts its own private rooftop terrace adorned with fabulous furniture and flora.

The neighbourhood surrounding the hotel holds a lifetime’s worth of restaurants and bars, but some of the area's very best dining can actually be found right inside the hotel's walls. Lauded restaurateur and chef Tom Colicchio is the mastermind behind the exquisite Temple Court, where a superb menu that highlights New York City dishes (both old and new) is served in a magnificently one-of-a-kind, antique-adorned dining room. The ambience found at Temple Court is hard to beat, but the Bar Room at Temple Court – which is set beneath an exquisite nine-story Victorian-era atrium – comes quite close. There, a suave lounge setting and handcrafted cocktails take guests back to New York as it was in a bygone era – don’t miss the Jazz Brunch on weekends. Last but certainly not least is Le Gratin: an inspired, Chef Daniel Boulud-led affair for fabulous Lyonnaise-style French cuisine.

There is an adequate gym, open 24 hours, inside the property, but given all there is to offer right outside the front door, you’ll no doubt be tempted to opt for an al fresco workout amongst all the action, rain or shine.
