Whether you’ve fallen under the Taj lure on a past trip to India or not, expect to enjoy the brand’s true luxury hospitality and service while you’re here at the Taj Campton Place. It’s a boutique-like property that’s located bang in the middle of town, in the Union Square district, a mere block from the Apple Store, shopping galore, and just two blocks from Chinatown when nothing but Dim Sum will do.

And better yet, if you’re here on the fly, it’s a quick five-minute walk to the BART train station that goes straight to the airport, avoiding the city traffic. Unlike other five stars in town, the hotel’s location is perfect as it’s on flat land, so, if you’re jet-lagged or just plain lazy, you won’t have to schlep it up (and down) any hills.

The hotel has 101 guest rooms and nine suites spread over two buildings, and hence they vary in size and configuration. Beautifully appointed, some can be smaller than others so upgrade yourself – the higher and bigger the better.

In the rooms, beds are very comfortable, and there are both showers and bathtubs. Some have better views than others, so specify if you’re picky about that. There’s a Nespresso machine in the room, but the coffee capsules are at cost. There's also complimentary house-car service, a gym and, best of all, the jewel in the crown when it comes to dining, Michelin-starred Campton Place Restaurant. There’s a tasting menu (with or without wine pairing) that’s worth its weight in Indian gold – the 24-carat variety. Don’t miss out on the masala omelette in the morning, memories of which will stay with you for a long time.

If you wish to dine more informally, hit the Bar & Bistro where you can have a curry or a hamburger or just about anything else you fancy. The Kerala fish curry is a favourite, ordered to any spice level you dare.

This is a downtown property, so the gym facilities are somewhat unusual, although functional, and certainly top-notch. They’re outside on the rooftop and so enclosed in the winter or a rainy day and open to the elements in clement weather. A nice touch is that if you’re in a rush, there’s complimentary morning coffee (as opposed to your room), tea, fruits and pastries in the lobby to grab on your way out the door.
