Old world splendour abounds everywhere you look. All rooms and suites are beautifully appointed, though somewhat lived in, and very old-worldly. Revel in the unique antiques, fabrics and artwork in each; the warm hues within match the outdoor splendour. Each room and suite is different, as are the views.

Bathrooms are all marble, Carrara (certamente), but what truly sets this hotel apart from the pack is the service. Don’t expect stuffy, white-gloved hovering attendants, because there’s none of that here. Far from it, in fact, as service is impeccable and personable. There’s no concierge, per se, but the front desk staff has you covered, even if you have too many bags, no dinner reservations, no idea where to go and an open schedule with hours to fill.

The breakfast buffet is wonderful. And whatever you do, spend some time at the Collins’ Bar, followed by a resplendent meal at the Collins’ Restaurant where local ingredients and dishes, like truffle risotto (our favourite), reign supreme. Dine on the terrace with its panoramic views if you’re here in the summer. But if you're here when it's cooler, there’s an elegant interior with a roaring stone fireplace to cosy up to. And, while we love the local whites, we would prefer, in times like these, a glass of Barolo or Brunello di Montalcino; the finest labels are stocked in the cellar.
