Occupying a prime oceanfront location close to many of Waikiki's most notable attractions is Sheraton Waikiki. A paradisial resort in an idyllic location, this waterside getaway is perfectly contemporary and done up with all the trimmings needed for a true Hawaiian holiday.

The hotel’s exteriors are rather run-of-the-mill as far as large-scale tropical resorts go, but the façade’s unremarkable aesthetic is eclipsed by the truly spectacular technicolour waters beyond it. Within the mega-resort are a whopping 1,636 hotel rooms, of which a mere 136 are suites. Many of these rooms offer views of the water but be advised that not all do. You'll certainly want to check in advance to make sure you snag accommodation with the choicest vistas. Given the resort's tremendous size, it comes as no surprise that the rooms are a touch generic. Still, they are perfectly pleasant and overall feel rather polished. Interiors are set in beachy shades of sand, ivory and taupe with vibrant bursts of colour coming from murals on the walls and the sea as seen through enormous windows. Nearly all of the accommodations feature private outdoor spaces from which to enjoy those glorious views. A word to the wise: avoid the lower-level floors as they can be unpleasantly noisy.

The culinary scene of the resort focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients that are artfully prepared in an authentic rendering of Hawaiian cuisine. For breakfast, head to Kai Market, which is set by the hotel's infinity-edge pool and features expansive views of Waikiki Beach and the ocean beyond. Also close to the water is Edge of Waikiki – widely recognised as one of America's finest pool bars and a popular spot with guests and locals alike. RumFire is another tantalising option and features more of those unbeatable views alongside craft beers and creative cuisine. If you tire of the venues on-site, fear not: guests of the Sheraton enjoy dining privileges at the resort’s sister properties which include Moana Surfrider and Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, among others.

The beach and the waves offer plenty of opportunities to stay active in the great outdoors, though if you'd prefer a more traditional workout you'll have access to a well-equipped fitness centre within the resort. The resort also boasts an award-winning infinity pool and an additional family-friendly option. After a few laps, pay a visit to Spa Khakara, which is a blissful oasis of wellness with eight treatment rooms.
