A lush volcanic archipelago known for its stunning natural landscapes, delicious subtropical climate and fabulous wine, Madeira occupies a magnificent corner of the world several hundred miles southwest of mainland Portugal. Set on Madeira Island itself within the archipelago’s capital city of Funchal is the Savoy Palace: the largest hotel in Madeira and a luxurious, well-placed launching pad for exploring all that the region has to offer.

The hotel impresses from the start thanks to a jaw-dropping lobby that includes a 33-foot chandelier made from nearly four miles of fine matte metal chain. The immediately established air of grandness is continued in a more subdued iteration in the property’s 352 guestrooms and suites. Within, all share an indulgent contemporary aesthetic with modern nods to Belle Époque glamour and a colour palette of soft neutrals that are complemented by gilded accents throughout. Organic materials like gleaming walnut wood and attractive marble contrast gracefully with metallic finishes (we particularly like the bronze lattices), and large windows let in plenty of natural light. It’s well worth upgrading to an accommodation with views of the water, as these spaces also come with furnished outdoor balconies from which to enjoy the sweeping vistas.

Savoy Palace’s address places it between the Old Town and the sea, which – in addition to affording guests plenty of opportunities for activity and leisure – influences the gastronomy scene at the hotel. There is an abundance of options to choose from, including Mediterranean-meets-Atlantic fare at Alameda Restaurant, which has a pretty poolside terrace; Madeiran-inspired breakfast at Hibiscus Restaurant and glimpses into the local culinary tradition at Terreiro. Authentic and spirited Portuguese fare can be found at Pau de Lume, while Galáxia Skyfood offers a bold culinary journey perched on the building’s 16th floor. Also on the sixteenth floor is Nikkei, which is the brainchild of Chef Miguel Bértolo and fuses Japanese ingredients and techniques with inspirations from around the globe.

Laurea Spa is among the larger such retreats in the region, and is a visually striking, forest-inspired sanctuary devoted to all things health and wellness. In addition to 11 treatment rooms and the expected saunas, Jacuzzis and steam rooms, the spa also boasts sensorial showers, an ice fountain and a halotherapy room, alongside welcome perks like a beauty salon and Champagne & Nails Bar.
