Set in the heart of the city in what was once the Palace of Justice, Rosewood Amsterdam is a charming escape in a wonderfully historical locale. Set smack on the water of the Prinsengracht – a UNESCO World Heritage-listed canal – the hotel is a celebration of the ample spirit of the capital city. The luxurious getaway is also significant in that its opening marks the Rosewood brand's first foray into the Netherlands.

Behind the hotel's 16th-century façade are 134 guest rooms, suites and houses. Within, the spaces are an eye-catching blend of old and new. Tapestries inspire oversized headboards and are cleverly lit from behind, while furnishings are plush and sumptuous, and carefully selected artwork adds a dash of modern spirit to the spaces. Views vary (as does window size, it should be noted), and while our favourites are certainly those accommodations that offer picturesque views over the canal, the vistas gazing out at manicured courtyards or Amsterdam rooftops are not bad consolation prizes. Light-filled suites introduce elevated design schemes along with more legroom, while the houses – which are designed to accommodate large groups or simply the most discerning guests – are absolutely magnificent, with fabulous views, historical elements and a dedicated butler service.

Locally sourced, seasonal ingredients are the backbone of the restaurant Eeuwen, the name of which means ‘centuries’. The cuisine here honours nature and its rhythms for all meals of the day in dishes that are colourful, creative and wholesome. Also located within the hotel is the bar Advocatuur, which draws its inspiration from the building's history as the Palace of Justice. There, clever mixologists serve up innovative cocktails (some made with an in-house distilled spirit jenever) in an atmospheric space, another highlight of which (somewhat surprisingly) is a menu of Indian comfort food cooked in the venue’s tandoor oven.

Should you find yourself needing a little assistance in recovering from jet lag (or from Amsterdam’s iconic nightlife scene, perhaps), Asaya Spa will have you covered. A tranquil sanctuary designed by Piet Boon, Asaya features a comprehensive menu of both holistic and cutting-edge treatments, alongside opportunities for lifestyle coaching, personal training and private Reformer Pilates in the onsite boutique studio. Nearby, there’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre and a calm indoor swimming pool for those guests looking to take a dip.
