Three generations of the Pizzinini family have owned and overseen the Rosa Alpina Hotel in Alta Badia in a gorgeous building that has stood before the mountains since 1850. A legacy of hospitality has defined it since the very start; from its early days of feeding and housing the guests of the little town’s church, to its current status as an Alpine getaway for the stars. Tucked into the Dolomites, the hotel is a haven for outdoorsy types in both summer and winter, while excellent food and an equally good spa keep those seeking relaxation similarly content.

The hotel’s interiors blend old with new for a stay that feels both refreshing and quintessentially Alpine. Each of the 52 rooms and suites are individually designed, and all are done up stylishly in soothing tones of beige and grey. Natural materials like blond wood and furniture crafted from tree stumps lend an authentic mountain vibe, while contemporary accents (think cubist fireplaces and elegant chandeliers) add an ultra-luxe touch. All are deliciously comfortable and supremely inviting after a day spent skiing or hiking.

The elegance continues at mealtime in the three Michelin-starred Restaurant St. Hubertus, the crown jewel of the hotel’s dining options. Named for the patron saint of hunters, the intimate restaurant has just eight tables and serves a wonderful interpretation of traditional mountain cuisine (via a ‘Cook the Mountain’ philosophy) alongside a splendid international wine list. The family-style Restaurant Fondue serves exactly what its name suggests; be sure to indulge in a chocolate dessert fondue after your main course of meat or cheese. The light-filled Limonaia is the perfect spot for a hearty breakfast before a day in the mountains, while the Wine Bar & Grill is trendy and laid back – go for a grilled meat dish or a slice of fantastic wood-fired pizza.

The mountains, naturally, are at the heart of the hotel’s appeal. In the summertime, Alta Badia becomes a hiker’s heaven, with peaks and valleys aplenty just begging to be explored. Cyclists will have the choicest of mountain roads and paved paths to choose from, while golfers are treated to incomparable views from the nearby course. Winter brings snow to the Dolomites, and the hotel’s shuttle runs nonstop, ferrying guests to and from the Piz Sorega lift station.
