Located within Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Penha Longa Resort is less than half an hour's drive from Lisbon and yet offers the serenity of a secluded retreat. The resort was the site of a monastery from the 14th to the 19th century, which guests can still visit, and later became a popular retreat for Portuguese royalty.

The 204 rooms and suites offer beautiful views of the surrounding nature from their private balconies and luxurious interiors. Guests are treated to feather beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, marble bathrooms and Nespresso machines. Designed for up to seven people, the Family Suite features a spacious living room perfect for quality time together and two bedrooms so that everyone has plenty of privacy. An ‘In-Room Camping’ package with toys and a tent for kids is available for an additional fee. The elegant Imperial Suite features a sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows for breathtaking views of the Sintra mountains, a marble bathroom with a jacuzzi and a sauna and a separate dining room with seating for eight.

When it comes to dining, expect to be wowed. There are two Michelin-starred restaurants: LAB by Sergi Arola with just 22 seats and an eye-catching wine tower with over 500 selections, and Midori, which offers Japanese cuisine with Portuguese influences. There’s also the option to dine on Italian cuisine at Penha Longa Mercatto, or Spices for Pan Asian dishes designed for sharing. There’s also Arola offering modern Portuguese dishes, and the poolside Aqua with light Mediterranean fare. Pre or post-prandial drinks are not to be missed at B Lounge which boasts over 100 gins and a menu of tempting traditional Portuguese snacks. The resort also organises an array of culinary experiences where guests can sign up to learn to make sushi, participate in wine and gin tastings or take a cookie decorating workshop. During your stay, challenge your travel companions to a game on the 27-hole golf course. Play a match of tennis or squash, or take in sweeping mountain views while working out on Technogym equipment in the fitness room which also offers yoga, pilates and personal training. You'll also find a hot tub, sauna and Turkish baths. Take a relaxing swim in the heated indoor pool or soak up the sun at either of the two outdoor pools.
