A relative newcomer to Lake Como’s legendary hospitality scene, Passalacqua is an idyllic getaway in the Italian village of Moltrasio. Though the property debuted as a hotel in 2022, its history extends much further back – specifically to 1787, when the villa served as the home of Count Andrea Lucini-Passalacqua. Three years of meticulous restoration transpired to bring the 18th-century opulence back to its former glory; it’s easy to see how Vincenzo Bellini found inspiration to compose his opera La Sonnambula during his stay here.
Just 24 accommodations comprise the boutique property, spread across three buildings on seven acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. Each of the trifecta has its own unique ambience – make your selection based on the experience that suits you best. If you’re travelling as a couple, opt for the Palazz, which is an assortment of eight romantic rooms tucked behind the villa. Interiors are sumptuously decorated in shades of terracotta or emerald and are resplendent with antiques. In the proud Villa itself, there are a dozen rooms and suites. Stay here for high ceilings, enchantingly elegant interiors and – in some – views of the lake. Should proximity to the water be a high priority, you’ll do best in Casa al Lago. This house hosts just four rooms in total, each of which is a sunny, light-filled space with a distinctly breezy atmosphere and an enviable location close to the water.
The gardens, restaurant and hotel itself are reserved solely for the use of guests, cloaking the whole property in an intimate, exclusive feel. Indeed, the restaurant feels less like a typical eatery and more like the convivial dining room of a fabulous Italian country home. Start your day there with a perfectly prepared coffee and fresh eggs – courtesy of the property’s hens – then opt for an alfresco lunch on the pristinely manicured terrace. You might also choose to dine inside the bar or perhaps somewhere more isolated out in the garden with a picnic hamper. Dinner can be taken indoors or out; wherever you choose, expect to be treated to superb classical Italian cuisine.
The lake, naturally, is one of the most spectacular attributes of the hotel, and you’ll certainly want to take a boat ride or two during your stay. There’s also a picture-perfect pool as another option for a dip, close to which you’ll find the Winter Garden: a former greenhouse turned all-day bar. Within the vaulted chambers of the ground floor hall is the property’s spa, which is a memorable place to enjoy a yoga class, a good workout or a rejuvenating treatment.
