On the banks of the Ebro River, Palacio Tondon, Autograph Collection is a perfect place to call home while you explore the local history, vineyards and the great outdoors. This former palace has been lovingly restored, preserving some original stone walls while adding all of the mod cons you expect from an Autograph Collection hotel. You’ll have a vast selection of vineyards and wineries within a ten-minute drive, plus myriad historical sites, museums and hiking trails with spectacular views.

With just 33 rooms and suites, you can expect personalised service and a decidedly serene setting. Decor in the guestrooms is calmingly neutral, with natural wood (some have exposed wood-beam ceilings), white walls and stone accents, with the occasional pop of colour here and there. The ambience varies slightly depending on whether you’re staying in the original palace, the former servants’ quarters or the newer wing, but overall, the effect is both rustic and modern. Some rooms overlook the vineyards or the river, and the five Junior Suites feature small balconies with panoramic water views.

While the rooms here are designed to soothe the senses, you’ll certainly want to get out and explore the town, including some tempting restaurants and bars that can be found within walking distance of the hotel. There’s one on-site restaurant here, Gran Reserva Restaurant, which serves creative Spanish recipes crafted from local ingredients for dinner, plus lunch on the weekends. As you might expect in a region known for its vineyards, the wine cellar here is impressive, and you can participate in gourmet tasting experiences to get to know the local varieties while enjoying tapas and broadening your wine knowledge. Room service is the only breakfast option available, but depending on how much you’ve been enjoying the local wine, breakfast in bed may sound like a dream come true.

If you don’t have a river-view balcony, you can always take time to relax in the shaded riverside garden, which is a lovely place to sip a glass of wine. There’s no spa or pool here (or anywhere in the town of Haro), but the hotel does have a small fitness centre with all of the essentials, although you may find a long walk to admire the local architecture a more satisfying way to get in your workout.
