Compared to the historical landmarks that surround it, the Palacio Santa Clara, Autograph Collection seems practically new in its striking 1916 building. With just 60 rooms, the property feels exclusive, but everything you need is right at your doorstep. You’ll be within a five-minute walk from the incredible array of shops on the Carrer de Colón, dozens of dining options and two movie theatres. There are several striking historical sites, museums, gardens and parks within a leisurely 15-minute stroll - a perfect way to wind down after dinner at one of the hotel’s restaurants.

Each room is individually decorated, with a mix of modern luxury and historic charm. No matter what style of accommodation you choose, you can enjoy the convenience of instant hot water, complimentary bottled water, a Nespresso machine, a large bathroom with plenty of counter space and a cosy sitting area. Choose a courtyard view room or one overlooking the city, or better yet, a corner room with panoramic views. The only suite option is the one-bedroom City View Suite, which has a nice living room to unwind in, but if you’re looking for an expansive residential-style suite or rooms with private balconies, this hotel probably isn’t your style.

The weekly Jazz & Tapas event at El Modernista Restaurant is a guest favourite, but throughout the week, you can enjoy artistically presented Mediterranean fare made with fresh local ingredients. Try the signature La Dama cocktail at the Modernista Bar, or head up to the rooftop to have drinks and Spanish snacks at El Torreón, where you can choose between a sunny terrace or an opulently decorated bar.

You might not expect a swimming pool here in the heart of the city, but up on the rooftop, you can watch the sunset from the cool water before stretching out on a sun lounger or sipping a drink while swaying in a hammock. The rooftop also hosts free yoga classes, or you can book a session with a personal trainer for fitness advice tailored to your goals. While there’s no gym or spa here, there are several places to get a massage or a facial within walking distance, and you can easily get your steps in by walking to one of the nearby parks or museums.
