While the Hotel Palacio de Santa Paula, Autograph Collection, is no longer a working monastery, the sense of serenity lingers. With 72 rooms, this five-star hotel on the Gran Via is a tranquil home base from where to explore Granada, with the Alhambra, Generalife palace and scenic hiking trails at the Dehesa del Generalife all within a 20-minute drive.

While the hotel lacks some of the amenities you’d expect in a more modern facility, repeat guests say the charming views of the city centre more than make up for it. If you’re here for the historic charm, the Bishop’s Suite is an excellent choice, boasting an original decorative wood beam ceiling over the four-poster bed and spacious living area. Even if you choose an entry-level room, you can enjoy thoughtful amenities like Nuxe bath amenities, a tray of chocolates, a mini-fridge and a Nespresso machine. If you’re travelling with a child, a few rooms and junior suites are available with a sofa bed.

In the former refectory, the fine-dining restaurant, El Claustro, serves regional cuisine accompanied by sommelier-selected wines for lunch and dinner. Local ingredients shine here, and it’s hard to beat dining outdoors on a beautiful evening while looking up at the stars over the cloister. Visit the intimate La Barra del Claustro to sip author-inspired cocktails while listening to live Spanish guitar music, or to indulge in cakes and pastries when you’re craving a sweet snack. Begin your mornings with a buffet in the Breakfast Room, where the selection includes cold cuts, eggs, vegetables and cheeses. If you’re staying for more than a couple of nights, you may want to mix things up and take advantage of being just a five-minute walk from Cafetería d'Sano, one of the top-rated coffee shops in the city.

The fitness room is small with just a few machines and a rack of free weights, so we’d suggest skipping the treadmill in favour of a brisk walk or jog to check out the incredible architecture and historical sites in the area around the hotel. There’s no spa on-site, but there is a traditional hammam with massage services just across the street.
