It's hard to imagine a more quintessentially Roman address than that enjoyed by Orient Express La Minerva, the very first outpost of the iconic brand’s new luxury hotel portfolio. Set in a 17th-century palace within Piazza della Minerva, guests are welcomed to the hotel by Bernini’s Elephant and Obelisk statue – remarkable enough, were it not for the Pantheon standing merely steps from the front door.

Needless to say, the hotel is as central as central can be. If the tourist hubbub isn't a discouraging factor, you’ll find the location to be exceptional: you couldn't ask for a better launching pad from which to enjoy all that the Eternal City has to offer. Busy though the surrounding neighbourhoods may be, the hotel inside is an oasis of calm. Architect Hugo Toro helmed the property's interior design, which expertly blends contemporary luxury and its historic roots with an elevated Art Deco elegance that evokes the grandeur and glamour of rail travel's golden past.

This sophistication extends to the hotel's guest rooms and suites, which number just 93 in all. At 25 square metres, the entry-level Classic Rooms feel small, though perhaps are not particularly cramped by Rome's standards. Upgrading to a Superior or Deluxe room grants more space to spread out, and suites feel deliciously roomy by comparison. For the most magnificent of stays, book one of the decadent Signature Suites: the Stendhal Suite boasts a bed beneath a frescoed ceiling, while the Orient Express Suite spans nearly 200 square metres. Wherever you choose to stay, you can expect an exquisitely curated environment resplendent with hand-painted headboards, shell-shaped sinks, alluring lighting and elegant nods to the Orient Express legacy throughout.

There are just two venues for drinking and dining on site, though you certainly won't need more than that with the magical culinary scene found on Rome's surrounding streets. On the seventh floor, Gigi Rigolatto Roma enjoys a spectacular rooftop setting with far-reaching panoramic views over Rome; while the vistas are impossible to upstage, the authentic Italian fare found there is superb. Beneath a glass ceiling on the ground floor is La Minerva Bar: a gilded, reverent space for everything from coffee in the mornings to an aperitivo at dusk.
