Start your stay here on day one – after a quick coffee from your room’s Illy machine – with a ramble up the dedicated hiking trail. It’s lovely, and you’ll feel you’ve earned that glass of wine (research purposes only) or two over lunch. Not to mention the phenomenal dinner eagerly anticipated (booked at least three months in advance) at The Restaurant at Meadowood, where chef Christopher Kostow reigns supreme, notoriously, with his three Michelin stars and a wine cellar that’s the stuff of dreams. The window-lined dining room at Forum creates a relaxed environment where dishes feature ingredients grown on Meadowwood Farm, while the Terrace Cafe invites guests to share small plates while sipping handcrafted cocktails.
There’s so much to enjoy here, plan to stay a while. Guests can choose between several pools, including an adult, a lap, a family and a children’s pool. They can also stay active on the tennis court or at the gym, which offers daily fitness classes, saunas and steam rooms.
Meadowood has a total of 85 cottages, suites and lodges. With more than a dozen room categories, there are choices to be made but décor is the same throughout – mostly whites and other natural shades. Some of the rooms feature wood-burning fireplaces and French doors opening onto private terraces so, if that makes you happy, just ask. For even more, there are many choices of suites. The Treeline Suite, a favourite, features a large Carrara marble bathroom with twin sinks, walk-in showers and a soaking tub with candles and Molton Brown amenities.
And bring the kids. It’s not free, but there’s a super children’s sports camp that’s open in the month of July for anyone between the ages of 6 and 11.
