Easily one of the most luxurious stays in Zürich, The Mandarin Oriental Savoy is a relative newcomer with a storied past. First opened in 1838 by hotelier Johannes Baur, it began its hospitality life as Savoy Baur en Ville, a hotel frequented by the in-crowd of days gone by, including Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Dickens. Baur’s ethos as a hotelier was one of elegance and excellence, and now – nearly two centuries later – that legacy has been fabulously reincarnated to equal notoriety. The hotel’s 93 million-dollar reimagining was completed in 2023 when it was re-debuted as the Mandarin Oriental Savoy: a refreshed icon located on Zurich’s most famous square.

The building’s original façade has been carefully revived and restored but within, the hotel feels entirely new. Parisian designer and interior architect Tristan Auer is to thank for the revamped ambience, which is an attractive blend of old and new influences that feels chic and sophisticated throughout. Just eighty accommodations comprise the boutique property: 44 rooms and an additional 36 suites, the latter of which are among the city’s largest. Elegant interiors are set in soft timeless shades and are bespoke from tip to toe. Graceful furnishings, carefully selected artworks and attractive lighting define the spaces, and the work of Swiss artisans features prominently throughout. Views vary from one room to the next: some accommodations gaze out over the courtyard, others have historic or city views, and a handful of options (both rooms and suites) offer private balconies or terraces

There are hundreds of restaurants within a few minutes’ strolling distance of Mandarin Oriental’s front door, and a handful of options within the hotel itself. Savoy Brasserie & Bar is the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant and offers an elegant ambience to go with an inspired menu that blends local flavours with international influences, including Asian touches paying homage to Mandarin Oriental’s roots. The dining room boasts artworks by German artist Angela Glajcar, and in the warmer months, guests can opt to dine alfresco on the pretty outdoor terrace. More art abounds at the celebrated restaurant ORSINI, which is one of Zurich’s finest Italian restaurants. Cocktails and small plates can be enjoyed fireside in the cosy Mandarin Lounge, or upstairs at 1838, the hotel’s rooftop bar. Open from April through September, 1838 is as much worth a visit for the artsy cocktails as it is for the spectacular views over the city – notorious Swiss vistas that are particularly memorable at sunset.
