"Under the watchful gaze of the Atlas Mountains, the Mandarin Oriental showcases stunning Berber art in its stylish guestrooms and riad-esque villas. Superb dining is another attraction."

A new-build resort that opened in 2015, the Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech is a true urban oasis that’s situated under the watchful gaze of the Atlas Mountains. It’s about twenty minutes from the city centre and a world away from the frenetic pace of the Jemaa El Fna and its surrounds. When you want to tap in, however, there’s a free shuttle to and from the hotel (a godsend).

The hotel’s main building and surrounding villas are a reddish, ochre-coloured marvel with a huge body of water in the centre that includes the main pool and adjoining restaurant. Design and decor are heavily influenced by the Berber culture, of old and of new, in a break from the usual Moroccan style seen elsewhere. Handsome collections of Berber arts and crafts adorn the spaces. The effect is stylish and striking; the result is relaxed luxury in a superbly salubrious environment.

There are 54 villas, and nine suites in the main building. Although smaller than the villas, the suites have direct mountain views and terraces with heated plunge pools. Villas are enclosed by high walls. As mini riads in their own right with bougainvillaea-draped courtyards and oodles of space, a hot tub, private pool, outdoor seating around a fireplace, an outdoor kitchenette and a dining table, they offer a more traditional experience than the suites.

Rooms in the villas are vast, as are the bathrooms (with round tubs and heated towel racks), and are beautifully furnished in cream and earth tones. Mod-cons, like a TV that emerges from the foot of the bed, are slick. There’s a Nespresso machine, and fresh mint is provided daily for guests to brew their own ubiquitous Moroccan tea before sitting down al fresco to a resplendent Berber breakfast. Families are distanced from solos in the villa sections, and there are kids’ menus and activities hosted every day.

With a staff of over 300, everyone from butlers to waiters to gardeners offers a smile and a helping hand. Bicycles are parked outside villas, which may be a good way to get to the superb spa, gym and huge indoor pool. Head off to Ling Ling (Hakkasan’s younger cousin) where the dim sum and other delectable nibbles are prepared to go along with your cocktails. Overindulge, and the golf buggy can take you back to your villa. Worth mentioning is the authentic Moroccan cuisine at Mes'Lalla, a stand-out.
