Picturesquely perched on the international waterway that shares its name, the Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus offers a singular stay in Turkey’s second-largest city. Despite the undeniably vibrant energy of bustling Istanbul, the experience of a holiday at the Mandarin Oriental feels more like a relaxed Riviera getaway. The fabulous views over the Bosphorus and the lush surrounding gardens heighten that world-away-from-it-all feeling, while its enviable address in the Kuruçeşme district means that guests of the hotel are never far from the action.
With just 100 accommodations in total, the hotel feels boutique in nature, heightening the sense of being in a tranquil and exclusive retreat. Tihany Design is to thank for the interiors, which blend the rich heritage of the Ottoman Empire with contemporary concepts and a hefty dose of traditional Turkish hospitality. Elements of eucalyptus, oak and red gum wood add warmth and dimension to the spaces, while local artwork and textiles lend a distinct sense of place. High ceilings and tall windows make the rooms feel even larger than they are, even more so if you book one of those spaces that also boast a private balcony. The most coveted accommodations, naturally, are those that overlook the Bosphorus – fortunately, a number of the guestrooms and every single suite enjoy vistas of the strait.
Flavours from around the globe comprise the culinary scene at the Mandarin Oriental, which is only fitting given the unique geographical location of Istanbul itself. Modern Cantonese is the cuisine of choice at Hakkasan Istanbul, one of 11 such locations worldwide. Dining at Hakkasan is an inspired, adventurous experience – and the views overlooking the Bosphorus are the icing on the cake. Olea Bosphorus & The Bar celebrate Italian flavours in a delightful alfresco setting resplendent in shades of yellow and green and dotted with olive trees.
