You’ll need several pairs of (designer) shades when you stay at Macakizi (pronounced Magicizzy), a dazzling, super-chic resort set in the hills and perched over resplendent Türkbükü Bay. Expect to rub shoulders with Hollywood A-listers, travellers from all over the world and revelling boaters alighting from their super-yachts to enjoy a meal in the elegant open-air restaurant, a choice locale – with food to match – that’s served beneath the surrounding ancient olive trees. Situated over four levels of wooden structures and decks, the stunning setting of the property is one aspect that sets it apart from the crowd. Much of life here revolves around the outdoor areas: gardens swathed in magnolia, oleander and hot pink bougainvillaea.

The hotel has artsy origins, which are still evident today with the use of artwork inside and out. The canvases in the rooms are by celebrated local abstract artist Suat Akdemir. Akdemir would have been only ten years old when the hotel opened its doors in the 1970s, yet it was, at the time, a retreat for artists and writers alike.

Of the 53 rooms, 35 have sea views with balconies, and the rest have garden vistas. There are 21 suites of varying sizes, and all accommodations have modern, fresh furnishings, boast bright colours and have big bathrooms with heated travertine floors and rain showers. Some suites also come with 24-hour butler service – definitely worth the upgrade.

Ayla by Aret Sahakyan invites you to enjoy an ever-changing menu curated by a Michelin-starred chef and packed with the rich flavours of the Mediterranean. If you’re in the mood for something more casual, CafeMed offers simple local cuisine, perfectly prepared and served in a lovely waterfront setting. The Michelin-starred (another,yes) Maçakızı Restaurant focuses on fresh, sustainably-sourced local ingredients, including many grown on-site.

There is no beach, but there are steps into the water. After a dip, return to your waterfront sunbed and raise your hand; a waiter will appear from the bar area. Aside from the pool, the fitness centre, windsurfing and jet-propelled stilt adventures await. Plan to visit Macakizi Spa to unwind in the hammam or to enjoy a Balinese massage. Best of all, the resort has its own yacht, which guests can hire, so at sea as on land, the Macakizi dream continues.
