Northern Italy’s Lake Garda is, in a word, captivating. The country’s largest lake is scenic from all vantage points: from the south end’s towering Rocca Scaligera fortress to the soaring Dolomites in the north. Between, the landscape is a picturesque vision of rolling hills, vineyards and olive trees. Nestled into the idyllic landscape’s mountains, high above the lake’s crystalline waters, is Lefay Resort and Spa.

The resort, situated above the pretty mountain town of Gargano, feels decidedly remote. And that is part of its draw: this is a place to, quite literally, rise above the hubbub found below. Interiors and simple and soothing, pleasantly devoid of any superfluous decor. Spacious rooms continue this aesthetic, feeling comfortably minimalist with wooden floors and gentle colour schemes. Fresh fruit and necessities for tea and coffee await you, and beautiful bathrooms of pink marble and stone feel spa-like. All rooms have terraces or balconies with lake views which are unsurprisingly spectacular. The resort is proudly eco-sustainable, and – in addition to using renewable energy and recycled rainwater – uses materials that are largely locally sourced.

The resort’s “Vital Gourmet” (for the rest of us, “dining”) options include Trattoria La Vigna, for a buffet-style or à la carte lunch in an easygoing atmosphere, and the more formal La Grande Limonaia for a Mediterranean dinner. Light bites are served poolside throughout the day, and the Lounge Bar offers live piano music and cocktails. While the food is lovely (and the resort produces its own olive oil), the menus can feel a bit limited; if you’d like to venture out for more variety, there are more than a dozen restaurants within a mile.

In the gardens, you’ll find a running track and fitness trail, and studio classes are offered within a large fitness centre. The crown jewel of the resort, though, is undoubtedly its spa. Arguably one of the country’s best, the spa leaves little to be desired with just about every amenity one could wish for: an ice pool, salt lake, outdoor massage gazebos and no fewer than 21 treatment rooms, to start. The spa’s scientific community blends Classic Chinese medicine with modern Western research; in addition to pampering treatments, you can go there to improve your posture or to be tested for food intolerances. The entire atmosphere is deeply tranquil and highly customisable; indeed, the spa alone is reason enough to come – everything else is just icing on the cake.
