In 1965, Johnno and Helen Jackson founded Kona Village Resort on the deserted shores of Ka‘ūpūlehu, creating a beloved getaway rooted in Hawaiian tradition that welcomed guests for nearly 50 years. Destroyed by a tsunami in 2011, the resort was put out of commission for over a decade, until it reopened in 2023 as Kona Village, a Rosewood Resort. Sustainably renovated and reimagined while honouring its original form, this paradisiacal getaway is truly one of a kind.

Kona Village spans 81 acres of dramatic coastal landscape on the Big Island, within which reside 150 guest accommodations. Hale (guest rooms) and Kauhale (suites) feature interiors designed by Nicole Hollis and reflect an effort to blend the inside with the out. At once both earthy and elegant, sophisticated yet totally approachable, the rooms are visions resplendent in natural materials like sustainably sourced Douglas fir, woven palms, gorgeous stone and dark tiles that pay homage to the volcanic rock outside. All are generously sized, luxuriously appointed, and kitted out with oversized lanais and outdoor rain showers alongside large bathrooms with dramatic standalone tubs. The views – of the mountains, the gardens or the ocean – are captivating. The ocean-facing options, naturally, are in highest demand.

The abundant natural offerings of Hawai‘i define Kona Village’s gastronomy scene. Pacific Rim flavours inform the locally inspired cuisine, with many ingredients sourced from the resort’s own gardens. At the heart of the property is Moana, which is open for all meals of the day and is particularly beloved for its breakfast. Kahuwai Cookhouse & Market is inspired by the Big Island’s paniolo (cowboy) culture and features open-air dining complemented by a wood-fired kitchen and live music every Thursday night. The schooner of resort founder Johnno Jackson has been restored to create the aptly named Shipwreck Bar & Sushi: an enchanting, toes-in-the-sand spot for crafty cocktails, superb Japanese fare and stunning views. Two further thatched-roof bars offer alfresco spots for a drink or two: visit Talk Story Bar for whale-watching, sunsets and classic cocktails, or head over to the Moana Cocktail Bar for inventive beverages and live music.

Asaya Spa at Kona Village is a must-visit for whatever sort of pampering you find yourself in need of. Built into the black lava flow, Asaya’s six treatment rooms feature dark, cocooning design, retractable walls and a superb treatment menu. A state-of-the-art fitness centre is well equipped with everything needed for a comprehensive workout, and guests can also take advantage of tennis and pickleball courts, two pools and the beach.
