Set directly across from the Huntington Beach Pier, Kimpton Shorebreak guests are virtually on the doorstep of some of the best surfing in Southern California: the waves are so good that they earned the area the iconic nickname of ‘Surf City, USA’.

Though the resort has 157 guestrooms (20 of which are suites), the vibe is distinctly a boutique one. The lobby feels breezy and eclectic, and the atmosphere throughout is unfailingly friendly. Rooms are bright and beachy, set predominantly in whites and nautical blues. Vibrant surfing photography pays homage to the area’s oceanic culture and views gaze out over the courtyard or the ocean. Naturally, it’s worth upgrading for the latter, especially if your room comes with its own private balcony. If you’re splurging, the speciality suites delight: sprawling furnished terraces and the property’s best oceanfront views make these accommodations particularly memorable.

Tea and coffee are always complimentary in the mornings, and the hosted wine hours in the evenings are a great way to mingle with other guests. For a more comprehensive meal, Pacific Hideaway is a locally loved spot for après-surf: this upgraded, surf shack-inspired eatery features fabulously fresh seafood in its coastal cuisine. Asian and Latin American flavours influence the colourful menu, which encompasses everything from Ceviche and Fish and Chips to Lao Sausage Wraps and South of the Border Short Rib Tacos. Have a cocktail at Pacific Hideaway, or venture out to explore: all the drinking and dining of Main Street is just steps away.

There’s no pool at the hotel, but it's an absence barely felt with the beach so close at hand. Surfing, needless to say, is one of the absolute best ways to experience the soul of the region, and both beginners and experts alike are able to take advantage of a year-round swell. Beach cruisers are provided by the resort for jaunts up and down the boardwalk, and other beachy accoutrements like towels, chairs, umbrellas and coolers all come covered by the property’s resort fee.
