Fabulous hotels might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Downtown Phoenix, but one establishment in particular has set out to surprise. Called Kimpton Hotel Palomar, this swanky spot checks all the boxes for an Arizonian stay: luxe rooms, a buzzy restaurant and – most importantly – a sparkling rooftop pool.

Within, attractive guestrooms (which are some of the largest in downtown Phoenix) blend mid-century modern design elements with a cool, local flair. The result is artsy yet approachable spaces that feel sleek and reasonably stylish, all without having to try too hard. Expect eye-catching elements throughout: blue and green patterned throw pillows, brightly coloured fresh flowers and artwork featuring a sleepy-eyed blue cow, to name a few. Suites up both the style and comfort factors and offer plush perks like deep Japanese soaking tubs and the property’s best views of the city. In all, guests can look forward to tons of thoughtful extras, ranging from the yoga mat in every room that comes standard to available-upon-request perks like nightly aromatherapy turn-down service, foliage from the Kimpton Plant Pals Program and even family fridges for nursing mothers.

Blue Hound Kitchen and Cocktails is the hotel’s primary restaurant and is a popular spot with both guests and townies alike. The urban ambience feels distinctly local, and the cuisine is unfussy yet delicious New American-inspired fare. The menu leans heavily towards meat and seafood (there are just a scant few vegetarian options), with dishes like Seafood Jambalaya, Bacon Wrapped Dates and Lobster Mac & Cheese. The cocktail list feels fun and vibrant, and a spirited brunch is served on weekends. Later in the day, head upstairs to Eden Rooftop Bar: a fun poolside spot where guests can beat the Arizona heat. Enjoy snacks and sips in the AC indoors or outside, where there are also private cabanas available for those who’d like a bit more shade. The bites served there lean towards the Coastal and Mediterranean varieties, and music often sets the vibe: expect live music on Friday nights and a resident DJ spinning beats on the weekends.

The outdoor pool is definitely a perk, as are the complimentary PUBLIC bikes that guests can take out for a spin whenever their hearts desire. There’s no fitness centre on-site, but guests do gain complimentary access to the nearby EOS Fitness Club and all the classes to be found within.
